A woman living in Huntington Beach, California, suffered a miscarriage a few days after being injured in a car crash caused by a mixed-martial arts fighter, who was allegedly driving drunk while talking on a phone and speeding through Costa Mesa and Newport beach.
Holli Griggs lost her baby boy in the crash.
The alleged culprit, Quinton "Rampage" Jackson, is a former light heavyweight champion for the Ultimate Fighting Championship TV show.
Griggs, 38, had been told by doctors she had a healthy pregnancy in the days before the crash but lost fluid from her womb and subsequently lost her baby according to her fiancee Bill Krebs, who added that doctors noticed an immediate loss of uterine fluid after the incident.
The couple are now contemplating legal action, but insist that "no amount of money will bring back my son," according to the Daily Pilot newspaper.
Griggs was said to be injured when her car was veered on the southbound Newport Freeway near Bay Street last month.
California Highway Patrol officers said Jackson's driving was erratic, that he was driving with a flat tire while talking on a cell phone. They added that he refused to pull over as they chased him through Costa Mesa and down the Newport Peninsula to 18th Street.
He was arrested on drink driving charges and freed on $25,000 USD bail.
The Orange County District Attorney's office told the Daily Pilot that it was evaluating the medical complications and whether to charge Jackson in connection with the baby's death. Under California law, a person is allowed to be charged with murder if they show a quote "abandoned and malignant heart" that results in a malicious death of an unborn child.
